The latest government pesticide results have revealed high levels of pesticides in lettuce and farmed fish, claims Friends of the Earth.
The environmental group said that a UK lettuce sample was found to contain inorganic bromides at levels 5.4 times the safety limit for four to six-year-old children.
Farmed fish, including trout and salmon, were found to contain a range of persistent chemical and all samples, except one, were found to contain DDT, a pesticide not used in the UK since the early 1980s.
Friends of the Earth is calling on the government to do more to support farmers and growers in finding alternatives to risky chemical pesticides and to urgently eliminate pesticide residues in food.
