Frost has delayed the start of the British iceberg and romaine lettuce season.

Growers were only able to start harvesting romaine last weekend and iceberg this week, supplier G's Marketing reported.

However, UK-grown little gem, red gem and Continental lettuce are now on shelf. G's was optimistic of a good season following the addition of new varieties and multipacks to its supermarket ranges.

"The category needs a dry summer, both for production and for demand," said G's leafy salads manager Charlie Kisby.
