Lidl has joined fellow discounter Aldi by pledging to adopt the traffic lights labelling system for its packaging.

“Customers are increasingly looking for consistency across all food packaging to help them make informed choices when purchasing their food,” said a spokeswoman for the discounter.

“Therefore, due to customer demand, we will be adopting a hybrid labelling system that will incorporate the existing Guideline Daily Amounts with the traffic light colour coding system.”

She continued: “We welcome any government-led initiative on this subject to ensure uniformity of labelling across all products and across all retailers, and will continue to respond to government-led health initiatives that positively impact on our customers.”

No final decision had been made on when the traffic lights would start to appear on packaging, the spokeswoman added.
