The producers of one of the only Scottish single malt whiskies to be triple-distilled has released an 18-year-old limited edition.

Auchentoshan Distillery, owned by Morrison Bowmore Distillers, in turn owned by Japanese drinks giant Suntory, has produced the limited edition of 4,800 bottles. The whisky has been created from a selection of Oloroso sherry butts, whose sherry tones have been gently permeating the whisky over the 18-year period.

Marketing manager Karen Murray said: "The traditional characteristics of Auchentoshan are clearly evident, however, the sherry maturation adds an additional distinctive quality." It is described as having aromas of heather, honey and almonds, citrus flavours and a herbal character.

Whisky author Michael Jackson said the triple distillation process at Auchentoshan resulted in a light-bodied and light flavoured subtle single malt.

The 55% abv whisky will be sold at £64.99 a bottle through specialist retailers.
