Root veg packer Huntapac is to spend £2m on a carrot wash line that will be kinder to produce and minimise breakages.
The line will include a dedicated section for Chantenay carrots, which are rapidly growing in popularity as a premium variety and will be backed this autumn with a promotional drive (The Grocer, September 3, p56).
The upgrade at the Tarleton packhouse, in Lancashire, is due for completion in early 2006, ready for the new season carrots in June, said managing director Warren Hunter.
Huntapac supplies carrots and parsnips to Tesco, Sainsbury, M&S, Iceland and Booths.
