Heinz will closely monitor the progress of a new low carbohydrate version of its iconic tomato ketchup in the US before deciding if it should come to British shores.

One Carb ketchup will hit shelves across the Atlantic shortly in a bid to capitalise on the current interest in Atkins-type diets.

Sweetened with sucralose rather than sugar, the new product contains only one gram of carbohydrate per serving, a 75% drop compared with the traditional line.

A spokeswoman for Heinz UK said the company had no plans to launch a similar product in the UK at the moment, but added: “We will wait and see how successful it is in the US and then review the situation.”

The newcomer will join No Salt Added and Organic versions of the kitchen cupboard stalwart in the US, as well as the various coloured versions.
