Wester Ross Salmon has been saved from being broken up by a management buyout worth £1.1m.

Scotland's oldest, independently owned salmon farmer was facing crisis when its directors retired.

The buyout sees two fish farm sites near Ullapool, three smolt production units, a processing factory in Dingwall and offices in Inverness transferred to the new owner under the name Wester Ross Fisheries, with £400,000 backing from Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Stuart Black, chief executive of HIE Inverness and East Highland, said: "With EU, US and Far East markets set to expand, there is significant potential for the sector."
