Marks & Spencer is launching a new range of high-welfare British veal, which it claims will be the widest range on the market.

The bull calves are being supplied by one of M&S's dairy farmers, following the retailer's decision last November to stop selling imported veal this year.

The veal range will be launched in M&S's Marble Arch store in London and rolled out nationwide over the course of the year.

The bull calves are fed whole milk, eat a natural diet and are group housed with straw bedding in well-lit barns, M&S said. "High animal welfare is at the heart of our business which is why we have taken the lead in introducing the largest range of British veal available on the high street. It is also a delicious range that we hope customers will enjoy," said an M&S spokesman.

"This is a great example of retailers working with their suppliers to find humane uses for bull calves," said chief executive of Compassion in World Farming Philip Lymbery.
