A giant papaya, weighing up to five kilos, is set to hit the UK from Brazil in a bid to unseat the popular mango, said importers.
The Formosa papaya, a new variety which is four to five times larger than the standard fruit, has been developed by the Brazilian Association of Papaya Exporters.
At the moment, the papaya market is worth around £10m a year in the UK, said Mark Horton, from importers Wealmoor.
He said it was looking to take on the mango: “Papayas are outsold by mangoes by a ratio of four to one. I do not see any reason why this can’t be reduced and our target is two to one.”
