New Covent Garden Market has unveiled plans to stop people taking waste fruit and vegetables from skips for their own consumption - by working with the charity FareShare to redistribute

edible surplus produce to the needy.

The market authority said 'totting' was becoming a major problem, and those taking the waste didn't realise it had been condemned by Defra as unfit for human consumption.

The market is to distribute flyers about the scheme around its site near Vauxhall in south London.
