While many retailers have had gantries installed by the big tobacco companies or splashed out on expensive kit, others have adopted more austere solutions.

Kieran McDonnell, a member of the NFRN executive committee, installed his own under-the-counter drawers from a kitchen shop.

“I did not like the idea of having prime selling space covered by sliding doors,” he said. “Three drawers (£47 each) were enough to carry my full display of 10s and 20s of cigarettes.”

McDonnell’s old gantry was removed last week, which has freed up 1.8 metres of shelf space as well as a prime selling area behind the counter, which will now display OTC medicines.
