Marks & Spencer has added contactless payment to 25 of its stores in London.

It joins the likes of Tesco, Waitrose, Boots, Burger King and McDonalds by introducing the quick-swipe transaction service.

The system allows customers to swipe their cards for instant payment of items such as sandwiches and drinks worth less than £20.

Visa Europe – which provided the service in conjunction with Streamline – said 21 million ‘contactless’ enabled cards were in circulation in the UK, potentially rising to 30 million by the end of the year.

As of March, there were about 110,000 contactless payment points in the UK, with 10,000 additional points coming on-stream across Europe each month.
