First Drinks is to add a sparkling wine to retro brand Mateus Rosé to ensure the range offers a "rosé for every occasion".

The company claims the non-vintage brut wine is the first sparkling rosé from Portugal to be marketed in the UK, and is hoping it will attract new drinkers into the sparkling sector. It will retail for £7.99, a £2 premium on the still version.

"The time is right to complete the Mateus portfolio," said senior brand manager Anthony Habert. "Mateus has an extremely loyal following and our research tells us this variant will attract new consumers into sparkling wines".

Mateus Rosé Sparkling Brut will not come in the brand's distinctive round bottles, but in Champagne-style packaging with a silver and black label.

"We have ensured the packaging will appeal to a wide audience with its classy, fresh and modern style," Habert explained.

Mateus is worth £13.9m in the UK off-trade (Nielsen MAT to 19/04/08).
