Sir Paul McCartney has stepped up his campaign to cut meat consumption.

Speaking at the Euro­pean Parliament, he argued the case that eating less meat would reduce global warming.

His appearance was not well received by the NFU. "Sir Paul McCartney should not be using this debate to further what are his personal, strident vegetarian beliefs," said president Peter Kendall.

Sir Paul's plea came as the English beef and lamb industry unveiled plans to reduce its environmental impact by 11% by 2020.
