DEFRA's latest UK production estimates for January-April put the beef tonnage up nearly 9% against a year earlier, mutton and lamb almost 19% higher, and pork output 6.5% heavier. Only bacon is reckoned to have been down, by 3.4%. Cattle slaughterings in April alone were 13% greater than 12 months previously, the sheep and lamb kill up by about half, and the total for pigs edged above the corresponding figure because sow culling increased sharply. {{MEAT }}
