Sir, I read with interest your article on cod in the Barents ('Too many fish in the sea, say Norwegian cod industry experts', 16 October).

Barents cod is now within safe biological limits, which shows how effective good management and husbandry of stock can be.

The fact that the current health of this once-depleted fishery is now above precautionary limits is testament to the good practice adopted. However, the suggestion that more fishing is required to avoid collapse is incongruous as historically the area has sustainably hosted higher cod numbers.

Boats at sea and quota should always be determined in line with scientific advice and the precautionary approach, as advocated by the ICES, in order to guarantee a sustainable and plentiful cod population, fishery and seafood supply.
