Morrisons has thrown down the first gauntlet of this year's barbecue season with a customer guarantee that its stores will never run out of burgers.

The supermarket's Burger Guarantee covers seven products beef, steak, pork, lamb, steak & onion, pork & leek and lamb & mint burgers. Morrisons has vowed that its 1,400 in-store butchers will hand-make these burgers if shoppers cannot find any on shelves.

Asked if Morrisons would offer its customers compensation should it be unable to fulfil its guarantee, a spokesman said: "We don't plan on letting our customers down." As Morrisons owned more of its supply chain than other retailers, it would be able to respond much faster to rising demand, he added.

Morrisons is also introducing a system that will allow customers to order barbecue meat and pick it up from the butcher's counter.
