Morrisons has signed up to the Social Mobility Business Compact, a scheme launched by deputy PM Nick Clegg to aims to ensure equality in the jobs market.
More than 100 companies have signed up so far, each making a commitment to make entry into their employment structure fairer.
“Business has an obligation to ensure Britain has the right skills,” said Morrisons chief executive Dalton Philips.
“That’s why we work so hard to give our colleagues the skills they need. Ninety-five percent of our store managers began their careers in hourly paid positions, progressing all the way from shop floor to top floor.”
Clegg added: “I’d like to thank Morrisons for signing up to the Business Compact. Today’s success makes me even more ambitious.
“This great news is just the beginning. I will be doing everything I can to bring even more businesses on board.”
