Morrisons is donating £100,000 of food from stores across the country to help tackle holiday hunger.

It said all 497 stores and its 25 manufacturing and logistics sites would support activity programmes arranged by local schools, community groups and the government-funded holiday activities & food programme (HAF).

Morrisons said its community champions would work with local holiday clubs to identify the foods they needed the most.

Donations will include fresh fruit, cereal, sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

The move comes after Morrisons became one of several supermarkets to agree to work with the government’s Help for Households programme last week, offering free kids’ meals in its cafés.

“Supporting local communities is incredibly important to us and we know that the summer holidays can be a difficult time for families concerned about holiday hunger,” said Morrisons customer and community director Rebecca Singleton.

“Schools, community groups and HAF aim to support children with healthy food at activity clubs during the school holidays. That is why we’re donating £100,000 worth of nutritious food to support the needs of local clubs across the country to help prevent families from experiencing holiday hunger this summer.”
