A Bill to extend the OFT's powers to protect dairy farmers and suppliers, as well as consumers, received its first reading in the Commons this week.

It was put forward after Prime Minister's Questions by Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, who is also chairman of the APPG on dairy farming.

It was discussed under the Ten Minute Rule, which allows a backbench MP 10 minutes to present the proposed legislation.

While the government rarely allows such Bills to progress to become law, it was an important issue to raise in parliament, a spokesman for Kawczynski said.
