Campaigners led by Scottish MP Alex Salmond are fighting to save a large biscuit and muffin plant in Hatton from closure after owner McVitie's failed to find a buyer. Three months ago, McVitie's announced a proposal to close the site and transfer cake production to a more modern plant at Halifax and biscuit production to a site at Tollcross. Unions had hoped an alternative would emerge in the form of a management buyout or the relocation of the factory to a greenfield site at Peterhead. However, the Peterhead plan was deemed too costly and other manufacturers approached by McVitie's to buy the licences for the portfolio weren't interested. {{NEWS }}
