Turkeys are set to have an early Christmas present with the launch of a special chill-out CD. The National Farmers’ Union is sending farmers a relaxation CD to play to the birds.
The idea came about after consultations with animal behaviour experts from the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh.
The tracks on the CD include everything from wind chimes to sounds of happy turkeys and monks chanting to the dawn chorus.
Mike Bailey, NFU turkey spokesman, said: “It is well known that a background of constant sounds calms birds. British farmers care about their animals so we want to put this theory to the test. Our ‘Turkey Top 10’ includes many naturally calming sounds that we hope will have a positive effect on the turkeys.”
All farmers signed up to the Turkey Hotline scheme will receive a copy of the CD with a survey form to fill out.
