A leading international shellfish company is expanding its product line-up. Anchor Seafoods, the international shellfish sourcing arm of the £45m turnover Seafood Company, has added live Bigbury Bay mussels from Devon to its range of premium mussel products.
Owen Haynes, the owner of Bigbury Bay Oysters and Mussels, said: "Mussels from south west England tend to be larger than those from Irish and Scottish sources because the water is so fertile, and warmer."
Chilled mussels sales are growing strongly with UK consumer expenditure estimated to have risen from just over £8m in 2000 to £9.2m in 2002, according to the Seafood Company. Mussels and mussel meat are now being supplied from a growing number of international sources including New Zealand, Holland, and Denmark. Waitrose is now stocking Bigbury Bay mussels, rsp £3.49/kg.
