Sales of mussels are set to double during Valentine's week as they compete with oysters for the affections of romantic diners.

The Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group said it expected to sell 100 tonnes of mussels during the week to 14 February, compared with a usual 50 tonnes.

Valentine's sales of mussels had recently surged, the group said. "Mussels are now seen as a 'sexy' dish," said Scottish Shellfish MD Stephen Cameron. Recent publicity around the health benefits of shellfish had also helped, he added.
