A shortage of raw material has pushed tuna prices to levels which are causing serious problems for processors around the world.
Bangkok prices have increased by 50% over the last four months, reaching $910 a tonne, with predictions that the $1,000 level will be reached over the next few weeks.
The unexpected escalation is causing shipment delays as packers hold off buying in the spot market, hoping for some easing, but the market is showing no such signs at the moment.
