Nestlé's plans to close its After Eight and Toffee Crisp factory in Castleford have been dubbed "a body blow" for the town by unions.

The factory is facing closure in 2012, following a proposal to merge Nestlé's UK seasonal manufacturing into its Halifax site. Castleford currently employs 210 people.

Ninety per cent of production would remain in the UK and a small proportion of exports would transfer to Hamburg under the proposals.

"Our aim is to offer our people alternative jobs," said Nestlé Confectionery UK MD David Rennie.
