Internet video service Netflix is teaming up with Disney to produce new TV series based on Marvel comic characters.

Netflix has committed to four 13-episode series starring Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage. The four series will culminate in a mini-series called The Defenders that will feature all four heroes.

Disney took a similar approach with its Marvel movies, introducing characters in standalone films before uniting them in movie Avengers Assemble. The strategy helped create a raft of lucrative licences.

The new shows, exclusively on Netflix from 2015, will be grittier than the Marvel movies and will be set in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen.
