Troubled cidermaker HP Bulmer has appointed Miles Templeman as chief executive from January 1.

Templeman is a former MD and group marketing director of beer company Whitbread as well as a former MD of Thresher Wine Merchants.

He takes over from acting chief executive Colin Brown who took on the role after October’s sacking of both chief executive Mike Hughes and finance director Alan Flockhart. This followed an “administrative blunder” of £3.8m at its off-trade business, dealing with supermarkets, off-licences and cash and carry outlets.

At the time Bulmer warned that a raft of one-off items would hit full-year profits to April 2003 by some £14.5m.

Bulmer has said it would now focus on its Strongbow and San Miguel brands in the UK as part of its turnaround strategy.
