New potato imports from the Mediterranean are arriving earlier than usual, which should be good news for domestic growers keen to avoid a clash, according to the British Potato Council.

Cyprus has already completed its winter crop, and is a fortnight ahead with its spring crop.

A similar pattern is evident in Egypt, while 70% of the Majorcan crop should be cleared by early May.

In the UK, growers of Cornish and Pembroke new potatoes have seen some frost damage to their crop. But the BPC said it would delay lifting only marginally until mid May.
