The full effect of European Union restrictions on exports of Egyptian potatoes in order to contain outbreaks of brown rot have been disclosed by the British Potato Council. It estimates that this year total shipments dropped by half to 150,000 tonnes. Approximately 700,000 hectares are grown producing two crops a year. Meanwhile French exports to the United Kingdom reached 48,700 tonnes, broadly in line with the average of the last four years  with the exception of 1999 when shipments hit a record 78,200 tonnes. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
