The British chicken industry needs greater investment if quality supply is to be maintained, the NFU has warned.

There had been little investment in the sector between 2004 and 2008, according to a Savills report for the NFU and UK broiler growers. Producers had a desire to reinvest but lacked the means, said Charles Bourns, chairman of the NFU poultry board.

All parties in the supply chain needed to operate as close to full capacity as possible and fair pricing was crucial for reinvestment, the report said.
