The NFU has launched a campaign designed to bring about fairer terms in milk supply contracts.

The NFU has briefed its dairy farmer members to encourage them to lobby milk buyers and MPs, and adverts carrying the slogan 'It's time to back our dairy farmers' have been placed in The Grocer, Total Politics and The House.

The NFU hopes to encourage milk buyers to eliminate unfair commercial practices in the milk supply chain. It claims that milk contracts are currently weighted in favour of buyers, by offering little clarity over how the price is calculated and tying farmers to long notice periods.

A do-nothing approach would see dairy farmers continue to be deprived of their fair share of profits in the supply chain, said NFU Dairy Board chairman, Mansel Raymond. "This will lead to under-investment and lower milk production."
