The National Farmers' Union has warned that heatwaves and droughts have caused harvests to be exceptionally early this year.

In an update it said that winter barley, oilseed rape and oat crops had been mostly completed and many growers were well on their way through spring barley and moving onto wheat.

It added that yields were expected to be down on wheat, vegetables such as peas, beans and cauliflowers, potatoes and oil seed rape.
