There is a huge opportunity to increase UK egg consumption, the boss of Noble Foods has claimed.

Over the past year Noble and the egg industry have run a campaign telling consumers that eating more than three eggs a week is not bad for health.

"If we communicate and merchandise effectively, there's real growth potential in the egg industry over the next two to three years," said Noble's CEO Peter Thornton, adding that consumers on the Continent ate more eggs per person than their UK counterparts. "The weight and frequency of purchases have got a long way to go."

Thornton's comments come as new research for British Lion Egg Products revealed consumers' 'shock' at discovering many products were made from imported eggs.

Consumers felt imported eggs were 'a hidden ingredient' that compromised the value of products, the survey indicated.
