Playmobil is looking to tap into sporting fever this summer with a range of pocket-money-priced sports figures.

Rolling out to retailers on 21 May, the Collect and Play Sports range comprises 15 boxed sets (rsps: from £2.99 to £3.99) each containing one or two figures and a selection of sporting equipment. Among the sports represented are gymnastics, cycling, judo, fencing, tennis, the javelin and beach volleyball.

“Children love to relive events they see around them and create scenarios at home, said Playmobil marketing manager Jamie Dickinson. “This new range will allow them to exercise their sporting imaginations without breaking the bank.”

The brand is also catering for footie fans with a range of soccer-themed sets launched last month including the Take Along Soccer Match playset, a Soccer Shoot Out and a range of players in international strips. And if it gets rough on the pitch, there is even a pair of Field Medics complete with injured player.

On 6 August, as the Olympics enters its final week, Playmobil will be rolling out the third series of its blind-packed figures. The packs (rsp: £1.99), colour-coded blue for boys’ figures and pink for girls’, contain a figure made up of parts that can be mixed between other characters.

The first series of figures was launched last summer and, despite limited distribution through supermarkets, was the brand’s biggest seller by volume in 2011. The range was expanded in February with a second series and has so far sold 600,000 packs in the UK.
