So long, couch potato Britain. This year’s jumbo haul of gold medals for UK athletes may have inspired lazy Brits to take up a sport in time to qualify for the games in London in 2012. During the Beijing Olympics, there was an unexpected surge in all things sporty, reported Tesco.

Cycle sales were up 130% year-on-year and equestrian goods were also up 130%. Sales of swimming costumes, goggles and associated paraphernalia rose 135% and sales of sports nutrition products were up 155% year-on-year.

“This kind of jump is unusual and there is no explanation other than people feeling inspired by Team GB’s success and being keen to emulate them,” said a Tesco spokesman.
