Tesco’s website in the Republic of Ireland left beer fans disappointed after an offer for Harp lager at 1 cent a can turned out to be the result of a “technical glitch”. 

The mistake was noticed last Friday, and had been on the website for “a couple of days” according to a spokesman. 

He said the unintentional offer was swiftly removed but 800 cans, ordered before the mistake was spotted, had been dispatched.

“Unfortunately, or perhaps, fortunately, it seems it wasn’t spotted by too many people,” he added.

Many shoppers who spotted the deal on Friday were left disappointed after their orders were cancelled. Tesco phoned them all last Saturday to tell them they could not in fact buy the beer at the bargain price.

The error on the website was picked up during routine price-checking.
