Sir, I have just seen the report in The Guardian about the alleged treatment of pigs at an Elmkirk Ltd abattoir and my message to the whole of the meat industry is: clean up your act. I will not eat meat again until you do.

It is incomprehensible that the meat industry would allow such treatment of living sentient creatures. They must have no respect for us, the consumers, because the way an animal is treated affects the meat. In fact, as I have permission from Defra, I may as well go ahead and rear my own pig for slaughter, and as it would be for home consumption I can have it slaughtered at home and ensure it is done properly.

I would normally end a letter saying, 'regards', but I have no regards for anyone involved in the meat industry at present.
