Wholesaler Parfett's decision to ban products containing trans fats is a brave step that should be roundly praised by all in the wholesale and independent sector. Boss Steve Parfett is a true champion of the independent sector, whether it has been through pressing the need for the current Competition Commission inquiry or taking Tesco head on in his ultimately losing battle over planning in Stockport. Now he has recognised a need for the sector to embrace growing public health concerns rather than leave the battlefield wide open for the multiples to blow their own trumpets about fat, salt and sugar reduction and better food labelling. His stance proves that independents care about more than price and promotions. Parfett has given manufacturers fair warning to get their houses in order over the use of these cheap and nasty ingredients, which have been cited as a contributory factor towards coronary heart disease. Any backlash from suppliers would be in bad taste.
