Sir; Tim Lang hit the nail on the head when he referred to sustainability and security (The Grocer, 11 July). Maybe the last time Britain was anywhere near food independence was before WW1 - but why on earth hasn't it returned there?

If my family can grow strawberries, tomatoes, potatoes and herbs, make bread, bake and cook, save rainwater, return carrier bags, turn off monitors, why can't everyone?

Why are we as a nation reliant on food imports and ready meals, unable to cook and useless at showing our children how to become observant and self reliant?

We need sustainability and security as much in our food legislation as in our family lives. The loss of one means the loss of the other.
