SIR; The decision by M&S to stock other brands' products ('M&S plans electric ways with brand', The Grocer,) will require it to consider carefully what brands and products it stocks.

M&S has a terrific asset in its brand, which has remained strong through the good and the bad. The non-food and non-clothing products that M&S says it will stock, such as cameras and mobile, will need to carry its own stamp of quality.

The M&S brand stands for quality and responsibility. Products and brands in M&S stores need to match up to these core components.

And if M&S remains determined to stretch its brand, it is putting itself into the same category as other large retailers. M&S will need to take care to remain distinct and not just become a copy of them.
