In last week's column we told how a TV reporter in China had uncovered evidence that meat buns made with cardboard were on sale. Well it now seems British broadcasters, reeling from revelations about phone-in competitions and Bear Grylls, aren't the only ones accused of faking it. The Xinhua news agency reports that a freelance reporter has been detained by Chinese police after it emerged he had concocted the whole meat buns story. According to the police, the reporter told editors he wanted to investigate the quality of pork buns (well, who wouldn't?). But after searching in vain for a story, he decided to make one up instead. Chinese TV broadcast a heartfelt apology.
