Sir, It may be unthinkable to tobacco lobbyists but the government has a third option available to it full implementation of the tobacco display ban. ('Tobacco display ban to be scrutinised in ministerial meeting', 24 July, p6).

Displays in shops are one of the ways tobacco firms can market to the hundred thousand-plus new smokers they need every year to replace those who die or quit.

With its stated commitment to public health the government should act on the legislation before it and put tobacco out of sight.
