Organic companies with a combined turnover of £950m met Defra secretary David Miliband this week to demand a ban on GM material in organic food.

The meeting took place in the wake of an EU decision to allow up to 0.9% GM in organic food, without declaring it on the label. The Soil Association accused the government of only consulting biotech companies before backing the new rules.

Policy director Peter Melchett said consumers would end up paying for the move.
