Southern regional Milk Marque successor Milk Link is planning to offer a 1.5ppl premium to dairy farmers converting to organic production. The producers' co-op's established organic producers will receive 30.2ppl from April 1 when the producers' co-op takes over the marketing of raw milk from Milk Marque. The 1.5ppl support package for those in transition is offered for two years. While a herd can qualify as organic within as little as six months, the land on which it grazes can take over two years to qualify. Milk Link expects demand for organic raw milk to treble over the next two years. There are about 100 Milk Link members contemplating conversion to organic production: this could be worth 40 million litres a year to the region's organic milk pool. Commenting on the new deal, Milk Link operations director Neil McFarlane said: "This sets the style fo the way Milk Link plans to work with its customers. Partnership is essential, as is meeting market demand." {{PROVISIONS }}
