Procter & Gamble has sold its controversial kids’ drink Sunny D - along with its other juice brand Punica, sold mainly in Germany - to US private equity firm JW Childs.

P&G put Sunny D up for sale last July to focus on its snacks and coffee business. Since its launch in the UK in 1998 Sunny D sales reached £140m but tumbled after negative publicity about the drink’s formula from parents and consumer groups.

Founding partner at JW Childs, John Childs said both brands were “growing, with good advertising, strong future prospects and a fantastic organization”.

No financial terms of the deal were disclosed.
