Del Monte is hoping to cut itself a slice of ambient sauce territory with the launch of Passata ­ a tomato base for Mediterranean dishes. Passata targets younger, health conscious consumers, and comes in two flavours ­ Original and Roasted Peppers and Garlic -­ in 500 PET resealable bottles. It is a blend of Italian tomatoes for pizzas, pastas, dips and sauces, positioned as a mainstream product with premium ingredients (rsp 59p). Del Monte has been extending its portfolio in new directions recently. Last month, it launched a three strong range of Smoothies.
