Defra has given pasty maker Proper Cornish an XAP licence to sell its products outside the UK. The first pallet of exported Proper Cornish traditional steak pasties was sent to Ireland-based retailer The Cornish Pasty Co at the beginning of this month.
Jane Flowerdew, commercial director of Proper Cornish, said: “We are currently holding discussions with a number of potential customers in Germany, Spain, Italy and even as far a field as the United States”.
XAP licences, notoriously hard to get, allow companies to export British beef in spite of the effective ban on exports post-BSE.
