Coles has launched a recruitment drive for yet more UK talent.
The Australian supermarket, which already boasts a string of ex-pats in its executive team, is advertising in the UK for Australia-based roles such as replenishment manager, senior range and space manager, product technologist, senior marketing manager and roles in its growing online business.
Coles, which has around 740 supermarkets, 800 off licences and 630 c-stores in Australia, is no stranger to targeting the UK for talent. Its MD Ian McLeod is a former MD of Asda. Other ex-pats include CFO Tony Buffin, operations director Stuart Machin and merchandise director John Durkan.
“If you’re career driven and a highly strategic thinker, we want your retail skills at the heart of our transformation to help make our customers shopping experience more enjoyable than ever,” an ad for the recruitment drive stated.
There was a clear trend in young executives leaving the UK in order to cut their teeth in senior roles, one UK headhunter said.
“Because of the economic climate, people here are staying in their current roles for longer, leaving middle management with less chance of progression, so they’re looking abroad instead,” he added.
Last month, Coles reported a 4.4% increase in half-year like-for-like sales. Owner Wesfarmers put the strong performance down to increased customer numbers and ongoing improvements in value, quality and service.
