British Retail Consortium director general Stephen Robertson is to step down in December.
Robertson joined the BRC in 2008 having spent 14 years on the boards of several major UK retailers including B&Q, Kingfisher and Woolworth.
As well as his role at the BRC, Robertson is a non-executive of the Timpson Group and Hargreaves Lansdown. Apart from continuing in these positions he said he had no plans to move onto anything else.
The search for his replacement is expected to start shortly and Robertson will be involved in the process.
“Stephen has made a sterling contribution to the BRC and has moved the organisation forwards both in its policy achievements and in its financial stability,” said BRC chairman Rob Templeman.
“The membership of the BRC has grown significantly under Stephen’s leadership and he will leave the BRC in a position of great strength and influence as the leading campaigning organisation for retailers.”
